Inside Outside
One of our past renovation projects in Oakham Rutland. A terrace house semi which we took back to bare brick and created a wow factor rear extension.
Structural engineers being typical engineers said it couldn’t be done and wanted to put a steel post in the middle. But that was not part of our plan, so we told them to try a little harder rather than take the easy option of put a post in the middle. Which is what everyone else probably would have done. But we aren't everybody else!
So lots of steel beams later (and I mean lots) we have an amazing open space that seamlessly opens out into the courtyard. Its a term often used, but we wanted to blur the devision between inside and outside, creating an inside/outside space. So the outside brick wall was built that continues inside the extension behind the kitchen while the high-end porcelain floor tiles used for inside are also used outside. Creating a large continuous space.
So in summer with the large 5m bifold doors open and all the light from the huge roof lantern you get one large amazing party space, where the distinction between outside and inside is blurred to the point it feels like one big space… Day or night.
